20 Bandana Hairstyle Outfits That Actually Work on Real Hair

"A bandana in your hair changes the entire read of an outfit. It's the one accessory that works harder than it costs."

I've been wearing bandanas in my hair since before it was a Pinterest category. The thing is — people always act like it's complicated, like you need to know a specific tying technique or have the right hair type. You don't. You need a bandana that's the right size for what you're trying to do, and an outfit that's not competing with it.

Camille and I pulled twenty of them from our Amazon wishlist and actually wore them — not in a studio, not styled by a third party. We wore them to coffee shops and rooftop brunches and to the beach and to restaurants and on city streets where nobody was watching. The photos happened because we had our phones.

Here's what we figured out: the technique matters less than the placement. A triangle bandana at the nape of your neck reads completely different from the same bandana tied at the crown. A square scarf woven through a bun looks like something you planned; the same scarf tied as a bow on a ponytail looks like something you grabbed. Neither is wrong. You just have to pick one and commit.

Every bandana in this edit is under $20. Most are under $10. All are linked directly under the outfit that wears them — so if you want the exact one, you can get it in two clicks.

Outfit #1

Floral Mesh Bandana + Linen Wide-Leg

The move is to tie it while you're walking — like you thought of it on the way. The floral mesh is lightweight enough to stay put in wind without strangling your ponytail. Paired it with the easiest outfit possible so the bandana could be the thing.

Outfit #8

Navy Floral Kerchief + Trench & Chelsea Boots

Camille walking a tree-lined autumn sidewalk, navy blue floral bandana tied as a kerchief under her chin, beige trench coat over cream turtleneck, Chelsea boots, fall leaves

The under-chin kerchief tie is having a revival and Camille is partly responsible. It works with a trench the way it works with nothing else — there's something about the collar framing it that makes the whole thing look intentional and expensive. This bandana is $6.49.

Outfit #9

Gold Satin Head Wrap + Tropical Co-ord

Zara laughing on a rooftop with eyes closed, large satin square scarf wrapped as a full head wrap in gold and burgundy, bold tropical printed co-ord set, strappy gold mules, blown-out sky

The full head wrap is a different category of commitment and I am fully in it. You need a 35-inch square to get the coverage right — anything smaller and you're constantly adjusting. The gold and burgundy against the tropical print is maximalist without being chaotic. The eyes-closed photo happened by accident.

Outfit #19

Classic Printed Bandana + Summer Denim Cut-Offs

Zara mid-step in direct summer sun, classic red and white printed cotton bandana folded and tied in her natural hair at the front, vintage washed graphic tee, high-waist light-wash denim cut-off shorts, white Converse, silver hoop earrings

There is no wrong way to do a graphic tee and denim shorts if you add a bandana. The classic red-print fold-and-tie at the front of the hair is the original move for a reason — it balances the face and keeps everything out of your eyes when it's this hot. This is the only photo from this shoot where I was actually paying attention to where I was walking.

Outfit #20

Satin Bandana Bandeau + Editorial Sheer Blouse

Camille looking out a window in soft morning light, high-waist wide-leg camel trousers, large satin bandana scarf tied as a bandeau top layered under a sheer white chiffon blouse left open, holding a glass of water, minimal gold jewelry

This one broke some unspoken rule and we both knew it when we were shooting. The satin bandana tied as a bandeau under a sheer blouse is not something you plan — it's something you discover on a Sunday morning with good light. Camille wore this to her own apartment, which is exactly the right amount of effort.

The Edit

Twenty looks, two people, one month of actually wearing these. The short version: get the 35-inch satin if you want to do head wraps, get the triangle packs if you want nape ties or beach hair, and get the crochet or lace ones if you want the looks that make people ask what boutique you're shopping at.

The rest is just putting it on.
